About

ARTIST STATEMENT

Much of my work is designed to reimagine watercolour, giving the medium a modern update to make it as contemporary as possible. I am interested in pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible with watercolour, giving my pieces an enduring character that still capitalises on its famously ephemeral and spontaneous nature.

I am constantly experimenting with different effects and I play with the make-up of the paint itself. This way textures can be achieved that you would not normally associated with watercolour. All of this is a balance though since watercolour is a subtle medium I aim to retain this quality since it is this that drew me to it in the first place.

My fascination with landscapes and forms found in nature comes from time spent travelling and living abroad notably the Canadian Rockies, The Scottish Highlands and more recently in Catalonia, Spain.

BIOGRAPHY

Anna Mabella Edgley is a modern watercolour artist living in Bath, UK, whose abstract and semi-abstract work strives to give this traditional medium a modern update that’s as contemporary as possible.

Her approach has led to some viewers confusing pieces of her work with oil painting at times, illustrating how much space remains for experimentation and innovation with this medium. Recently her paintings have been mounted on board removing the glass and further enhancing the contemporary feel of them.

A former architect and a self-taught painter, she has taken part in the Wylye Valley Art Trail and the Bath Art Fair, and regularly holds workshops where she teaches artists of all levels the techniques she uses in her own art.
